Direct Fulfillment (DF)
Updated
Direct Fulfillment (DF) is Amazon's dropship program for first-party (1P) vendors, the brands that sell wholesale to Amazon through Vendor Central. Amazon still buys the goods and the listing still reads "Ships from and sold by Amazon", but the vendor ships each customer order from its own warehouse on a prepaid label Amazon provides. Formerly called Dropship Central, it runs on its own vendor code (Amazon's supplier number for a vendor), separate from the code used for normal replenishment. Amazon has to switch it on, and practitioner guides describe it as invite-only: Amazon decides who gets it, so confirm current eligibility with your Amazon contacts. In practice, Amazon fills orders from stock in its own network first, because that tighter delivery promise wins the buy box (the offer a product page puts in front of the shopper), unless the vendor's warehouse can promise delivery as fast as Amazon Retail's own fast-track promise.
Nothing enters Amazon's inbound network, so, as practitioners report, Direct Fulfillment avoids most prep, inbound shipment-notice and routing chargebacks. The cost moves to order discipline. Cancelling an accepted order is, in a practitioner's words, "one of the only infractions that carries a direct financial fine", and a high cancellation rate can suspend Direct Fulfillment access. The fine's amount is not public.
What does Direct Fulfillment ask of the vendor?
Fast answers on every order, and almost no cancellations.
- Purchase orders: the vendor accepts or rejects each Direct Fulfillment purchase order within about 24 hours.
- Shipment confirmation: Amazon's Direct Fulfillment shipping documentation asks vendors to confirm shipment within four hours after it leaves the warehouse. That four-hour rule applies to Direct Fulfillment only, never to normal 1P purchase orders.
- Compliance chargebacks of its own: practitioners list cancellations, late shipments, wrong shipping method and ASN (Advance Shipment Notification) errors. They appear under Reports, then Operational Performance, so check the Direct Fulfillment lines on your own page.
Amazon publishes no Direct Fulfillment thresholds. It manages the program by internal review, by lengthening the handling time shoppers see, and by suspending access. For chargeback prevention, treat near-zero cancellations and near-100% on-time shipping as the bar.
Freight is one of the allowances a vendor funds, alongside co-op (the allowances a vendor funds under its agreement with Amazon) and damage allowances. In practitioners' view no inbound freight allowance should apply to Direct Fulfillment units, because the vendor ships them. If your accrual report shows a freight allowance on Direct Fulfillment units, query it, and add it to any Vendor Central deduction recovery review.
